The Iv0038 monoclonal antibody recognizes HIV-1 gp120, a heavily glycosylated ~120 kDa envelope glycoprotein that forms the outer subunit of the viral Env complex. gp120 mediates viral attachment by binding to the CD4 receptor and coreceptors such as CCR5 or CXCR4 on target cells, making it a key determinant of viral entry and tropism. By targeting conformational epitopes on gp120, Iv0038 can neutralize HIV-1, blocking the interaction between gp120 and host receptors and thereby preventing fusion and subsequent infection. Because gp120 is exposed on the virion surface and undergoes conformational changes during receptor engagement, antibodies like Iv0038 are valuable tools for studying viral entry mechanisms, Env antigenicity, and immune responses to HIV-1.
